Western and Asian culture differ in the means of behaviour and beliefs; however it is Australia and Cambodia that unite in similarity when it comes to the traditional crafting of textiles. This is an important aspect of the Brands values.

Cambodia –

Cambodia is currently experiencing a lost generation whilst being hit with an economic breakdown and governmental disruption - the detrimental aftermath of the Khmer Rouge. They are not at a point where Cambodia can self-sufficiently run businesses that mass-produce to a global mass market. Despite the fact that the country has many factories that are mass-producing, it is often for, and economically maintained by offshore businesses.

It can be said that the country has no other choice but to result back to their roots and what they know to rebuild what was a fertile and bountiful kingdom. It is their poverty that is rejuvenating and preserving the Ancient and well-abundant Cambodian culture. Furthermore, their craftsmanship is helping to rebuild ‘The Kingdom of Cambodia’ and its people. It is this that Ternary and Tonik celebrate throughout the entire business paradigm. The ‘basic’ things are the beautiful things.

Ultimately, the work of handicraft is what provides many modern-day Khmers with a better vivacity. Many organisations have been developed to practice these traditional skills, which in the end benefit the makers with the right wages and a self-sufficient life.

Australia –

On the other hand, due to Australia’s success in trade, it has the means to produce to a mass market. It can be said that this is the reason behind the country experiencing an increasing result in the mass-production of goods, particularly within the leather industry. Therefore, there has been a rapid decline in the number of apprentices available within the Australian leather-crafting industry. However, there are still a number of businesses that stick to traditional Australian leather methods and agricultural farming.

Ternary and Tonik supports the work of those that are pursuing these historical growing methods when it comes to breeding in an organic and natural environment for the animals. Furthermore, the brand encourages the leather makers and natural tanners that still exist. It pushes for an increase in bringing back apprenticeships for the new generations to learn and preserve these traditional processes.
